The Diamond plated wire it is a 8.5 or 11 mm diameter cable on which small steel cylinders are inserted to which synthetic diamond beads have been applied on the surface. It was born for stone cutting, invented by Luigi Madrigali (1932-2006), inventor of the first diamond wire machine and later of water cushions. The large-scale use of diamond wire took place in the 1980s, replacing the previous cutting technique with helicoidal wire, where the abrasive used was silica sand; it was quite dangerous as the old technology did not have today's security parameters.
Current regulations and construction techniques today guarantee safety, avoiding that the beads are "shot" into the surrounding environment in case of wire breakage, and the cutters are placed with the control panel away from the cutting area in order to protect the operators from possible detachment of the beads and from the debris and dust generated by the processing; the research and development of this technology has made it possible to reduce cutting times reaching up to a dozen square meters per hour.
